Atheras Analytics awarded Best Digital Innovation of the Year at inaugural Strategies in Satellite Ground Segment event

Atheras Analytics’ Multi-Orbit Design Tool has been awarded Best Digital Innovation of the Year at the debut of the Strategies in Satellite Ground Segment (SSGS) conference, held in London from 4-5 September. The Award was judged by an independent panel of industry experts including media, consultants and analysts and reflects the companies that are pivotal to the rapidly evolving satellite ground segment as it keeps pace with advancements in on-orbit technology.

Atheras Analytics’ Multi-Orbit Design Tool has been developed to optimise the design of satellite ground networks for both GEO and multi-orbit constellations, considering weather patterns that are of particular relevance for networks employing higher frequency bands such as Ka-band and Q/V-band.

Conventional approaches to ground network design do not always capture the impact of recent climate change which is why Atheras Analytics uses the most recent five years of actual weather data combined with AI to determine the influence of weather on candidate ground station locations.

The Multi-Orbit Design Tool is used for modelling both GEO and non-GEO constellations taking into account, in addition to weather impairments, other parameters including:

  • Individual satellite capacity

  • Inter-satellite link capacity

  • Feeder link capacity

  • Multiple orbital planes

  • Multiple satellites/plane

  • Number (and location) of ground stations

  • Number of antennas/ground station

  • Operating frequency – uplink and downlink

  • Multiple coding and modulation schemes

Any of these parameters can be varied to optimise the design for maximum system capacity and availability while minimising investment costs.

John Yates, Managing Director at Atheras Analytics concluded: “On behalf of the Atheras Analytics team, we’d like to thank the judging panel for this Award. The industry is going through a period of transformation, and our AI-based technology has been able to evolve with it to accommodate constellations in every orbit. We look forward to empowering satellite operators in GEO or non-GEO orbits, to reap the benefits of this innovative software tool that enables them to implement the most efficient and cost-effective ground station design.”

The Award was presented at SSGS 2024, an event new to the satellite industry calendar that offers a unique platform to gain insights from leading experts and to explore innovative solutions that are re-shaping the future of connectivity and bandwidth.
